SEWING TUTORIAL:
“Flowy pants“
MATERIAL
- Fabric: Duchess satin 2.50 m x 1.40 m (2 3/4 yds X 55 inches wide)
- Fusible web 20 cm x 90 cm (8″ X 1 yd)
- Color matched polyester thread
- Invisible zipper 22 cm (7 inch)
- Other recommended fabrics: Viscose, Linen and Flowing knit jersey
MACHINES AND ACCESSORIES
- Sewing machine and overlock serger.
- In this tutorial, we use the elna eXcellence 790PRO and the elna eXtend 864air for finishing. It is also possible to add finishing touches with a classic sewing machine.

HOW TO CREATE
Fabrics
- Fold your fabric in half lengthwise with right sides together and selvages even.
- Lay and pin your pattern pieces following the straight grain of the fabric.
- Add a 5/8 inch seam allowance on all edges and a 1 1/2 inch hem allowance, cut, then mark your seams.
INTERFACING
- Cut a 2cm5 (1 inch wide) wide strip of fusible web and fuse it straddling the seam line at the edge of the pocket.
- Lay out the waistband pattern pieces and cut two from interfacing eliminating a seam allowance.
- Interface front and back of the waistband. Stitch waistband backs to front at side seams.
- Sew and iron the open seams.
- Mark the middle front.
SEW THE POCKETS
1.
- Pin the pocket lining, right sides together, on the two front sides of the pants.
- Sew with a straight stitch.
- Turn the pocket lining to the wrong side, iron and top stitch 1/4 inch from the edge.
- Position the pocket facing by following the markings, baste or pin along the topstitch to hold the two parts of the pocket together.

- Sew around the bottom of the pocket lining and facing with a straight stitch.
- Even out the seams and topstitch with a zig-zag stitch or with the 3-thread overlock on your overlock machine
- For the front of the pants, fold and hold the pleats, with a straight seam, along the waist line.
- Sew the darts in back of the pants.

- Lay out the front and back parts of the pants, right sides together.
- Sew the seams on each side of the pants legs.
- Even out, topstitch and iron your seams.
- Turn one pant leg right-side-out and one inside-out. Then sew the seam between the leg for both sides, front and back. For the back, sew up to the zipper opening mark.
- Even out the seams, topstitch and iron.
- Turn your pants the right way out.
4.
- Place your waistband over the waist of the pants, right sides together, following the:
- middle-front ;
- side seams;
- centre back seams.
- Stitch with a straight stitch along the seam line.
- Fold the waistband and seam allowances upwards. Hold with a basting stitch and topstitch” 1/4 inch” from the edge.
- If necessary, shift the needle to keep “in line with the edge of” the presser foot.
SEW THE INVISIBLE ZIPPER
1.
- Attach the invisible zipper foot (Z) to your sewing machine.
- Open the zipper, place the fi rst side of the zipper coil over the seam line.
- Slide the zipper coil into the slot opposite the seam allowance and sew along the zipper.
- Repeat with the second side.
FINALIZING THE BELT
1.
- Lay the facing of the waistband, right sides together over the middle front and side seam marks.
- Fold the seam allowance at the bottom of the waistband upwards.
- Sew the edge at the top of the waistband, as well as the sides along the zipper.
2.
- Notch the corners and even out the seams.
- Turn the waistband “to the right side”.
- Turn the bottom seam edge inside
- Hold together with a hand stitch.
3.
- Topstitch the edge, at the top of the waistband, and the sides.
- Measure and prepare a 4cm (1 1/2″) hem, leave a small additional margin if using an Elna overlocker.
- Overcast the edge
- By hand, sew your hem with a blind stitch.
Congratulations, your pants are finished.
